Brits 'to spend £8bn hunting winter sun'
24 September 2008
The non-event that was this year's British summer is set to lead to holidaymakers spending a collective £8bn on autumn and winter getaways, according to research.
A survey carried out by Abbey found that 15m British adults, about one in three adults, plan to take a holiday during out-of-season periods despite the effects of the credit crunch.
Some 1.1m people (6%) are intending to take their first foreign holiday in three years in response to the disappointing summer.
Perennially popular western European hotspots such as Spain and the Canary Islands are set to be the top choices, with 7.8m Brits (41% of holidaymakers) set to opt for these.
A more adventurous 4% of travellers will head to Asia, with similar proportions heading to Latin America and Africa.
Callum Gibson of Abbey said: 'Clearly many Britons are in need of escaping our gloomy weather and heading overseas.'
People aged 55 to 64 will make up a large portion (44%) of autumn and winter travellers and a quarter of these people will spend more than £1,000 on their trip, according to the survey.
