A new survey has found that, despite the rising popularity of foreign holidays, many British people find it difficult to relax while they are taking winter trips or city breaks.

Research by American Express found that 70% of holidaymakers are bothered by pressures at home while they are abroad, with rising costs of living troubling a quarter of holidaymakers.

More than a third (35%) of people aged 25 to 34 are concerned by rising costs of living while they are abroad as they are likely to be supporting a family or repaying a mortgage.

One in 20 (6%) of holidaymakers reportedly worry about falling house prices during their travels, while nearly a third (32%) of women are concerned about putting on weight as a result of their holiday indulgences.

Sarah Harrison of American Express said: 'A holiday should be a time for rest and relaxation. However, as our research has shown, additional stresses and pressures of home are often difficult to leave behind.'

The company claimed that one way people can reduce holiday stress is to use travellers' cheques for part of their spending as they are insured against loss or theft.
