09 September 2008

Football fans planning trips to Johannesburg, Cape Town and other South African cities for the 2010 World Cup will be able to buy tickets from January next year.

Around 2m tickets are expected to be put on sale in January, with more set to be launched in phases throughout the year.

Host cities, airport terminals and online outlets will be the first places where fans will be able to get their tickets next year, Reuters reports.

Overall, some 3.1m tickets are expected to be made available to supporters, with prices starting at about 157 rand (£11).

Around 120,000 complimentary tickets will be reserved for South Africans as the country hosts its first ever World Cup, but most citizens will watch the event at home on television.

Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the competition's local organising committee, said: 'The demand [for] tickets in the World Cup has always surpassed the supply.'

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be held between 11 June and 11 July, with matches taking place in popular tourist destinations including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay.
