28 August 2008

The Singapore Tourism Board has ramped up the excitement of motorsport fans ahead of the first Formula One Grand Prix held at night, revealing that 95% of the tickets for the event have been sold.

Set to draw thousands of visitors from across the globe, the night race will be held on the weekend of 26-28 September.

Race promoter Singapore GP revealed that some 40,000 of each day's 100,000 tickets sold have been purchased by buyers from outside Singapore.

Jason Ong of the Singapore Tourism Board said: 'Singapore is entering an exciting phase in its tourism development, and the Formula 1 night race will add to our growing reputation as a world-class destination, offering some of the most unique and cutting-edge experiences.

'The sporting world's attention will be on Singapore during the Formula 1 night race, and we expect to fully deliver on a top-notch program that will excite all racing fans.'

The Formula One world championship has six more destinations to visit before the end of the season – Belgium, Italy, Singapore, Japan, China and Brazil.

British driver Lewis Hamilton is the current championship leader on 70 points, followed by Felipe Massa on 64 and Kimi Raikkonen on 57.
