Families 'should head east to save money'
07 October 2008

The far east could be a good region to visit for families looking for a half-term break that won't hit them too hard financially, according to new research.

According to the Post Office's latest holiday costs barometer, packages to destinations in the far east are competitively priced and resorts in the region are cheaper than leading European winter sun locations.

Thailand was rated at less than half the cost of Cyprus, the newest eurozone member, with a cost of less than £34 for ten holiday commodities.

The Post Office also found that Jamaica (£71.29) could be nearly twice as expensive as Malaysia (£37.98) for holiday spending.

Despite this trend, the organisation said that the mid-haul destinations of Egypt and Turkey are proving popular and are set to figure prominently in the half-term market.

'Egypt and Turkey were among our fastest growing currencies this summer and that trend is continuing with a year-on-year September sales growth of around 19%,' said Helen Warburton, head of travel at the Post Office.

'The perception of good value combined with the fact that they will suffer relatively less from airline fuel surcharges than destinations further afield, is likely to make them popular half-term choices.'
