Travel Weekly magazine has published a guide to Italy for people taking 'special interest' holidays in the country.

Cuisine is one of the things that the European nation is most famous for and, according to Travel Weekly, the first region that food-lovers should head to is Tuscany.

This picturesque part of Italy offers specialities including ham, truffles and pecorino cheese made from sheep's milk and olive oil, which holidaymakers can enjoy while they are not seeing the sights of Florence, Pisa and Siena.

Tuscany is also well known for its wines, including a number of vintages that were made from different grape varieties in the 1970s.

People travelling to indulge their artistic interests should head to the Lazio region, the guide suggests, where painters can gain inspiration from archaeological sites, vineyards, forested hills and volcanic lakes.

Lazio is also a good base for the exploration of Rome without having to stay in the centre of the busy city.

The Italian capital boasts some of the world's most famous tourist attractions, including the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and the Colosseum.
