The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is to seek the views of airport passengers in a survey designed to develop a better understanding of air travel in the UK.

Launched in response to the secretary of state's request for advice on improving the UK airport experience, the study will be carried out at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester airports.

Travellers will be asked for their opinions on the service of airlines and airports for every part of their journey, from buying a ticket to moving through the airport to their inflight experience.

All types of passengers will be involved in the survey, including economy and business class customers, short- and long-haul travellers and people flying for business and leisure purposes.

Richard Jackson, group director of consumer protection at the CAA, said: 'The results of a survey of hundreds of passengers travelling through the UK's largest airports will help ensure that the CAA can identify those stages of the journey that are working well and those where passengers stand to benefit most from improvement.

'I encourage all those who are approached at airports to tell us about their travel experience.'

Passengers may have been preparing themselves for a less than satisfying airport experience at Stansted this week, with strikes planned for 28 and 29 August, but both actions were cancelled following talks between unions and airport employers.
