Major London rail plan gets go-ahead
24 July 2008
London's Crossrail programme, which is set to revolutionise travel throughout England's capital, has been given the green light after passing through parliament and receiving royal assent this week.
Work on what will be the largest civil engineering project in Europe is set to begin in 2010.
Crossrail is scheduled to be up and running by 2017, when it will become the largest addition to the transport network in London and the south-east for more than 50 years.
The line will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west through tunnels in central London with new stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and others to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
Transport secretary Ruth Kelly said: 'This landmark project is of major significance to both London and the whole country.
'It will generate jobs and economic growth, help revitalise some of our most deprived areas and deliver major improvements for the travelling public.'
London mayor Boris Johnson said Crossrail is 'vital' to the future prosperity of the capital and will reduce journey times for citizens and visitors to the city.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
