Glasgow wins City of Music status
20 August 2008

The Scottish city of Glasgow has been officially declared a Unesco City of Music.

Bob Winter, Glasgow's Lord Provost, accepted the title from Koichiro Matsuura, director general of Unesco, at a ceremonial lunch today (20 August).

The city has been given the status nearly 20 years after it held the title of European capital of culture in 1990.

Receiving the honour, Mr Winter said: 'It is wonderful to be accepting the Unesco City of Music Award on behalf of Glasgow.

'I am thrilled that Glasgow's rich and varied musical heritage has been recognised by Unesco. We embrace the award on behalf of our talented musicians and composers whose work has contributed to our great city being given the permanent prestige of being a City of Music.'

Glasgow is home to venues including the Barrowland Ballroom and the Royal Concert Hall and during the average week presents around 127 music events.

Unesco recognises cities all around the world for their promotion of music, literature, art and other fields. Other members of the Creative Cities network including Berlin, Buenos Aires, Montreal and Seville.
