Tourists 'can return to Florida Keys today'
20 August 2008
Following the arrival of Tropical Storm Fay in Florida this week, officials have said that visitors should be able to return to the Florida Keys area from today (20 August).
The storm moved diagonally across the Florida peninsula on Monday and Tuesday, passing over the Florida Keys before coming back ashore in south-west Florida.
Residents and visitors were evacuated from the area prior to the storm, which reached a top wind speed of 65 miles per hour and caused light damage.
Mario Di Gennaro, mayor of Monroe County, said: 'We have some cleanup to do and have to finish damage assessments, but I believe visitors can return to the Keys on Wednesday.'
Monroe County airports manager Peter Horton added: 'Key West international airport experienced rain flooding on the tarmac, but expects to resume normal operations on Wednesday morning.'
While local officials appear to be optimistic that the Florida Keys can return to normal fairly soon, forecasters have warned of the possibility that Fay could hit the state a third time if it gathers strength over the Atlantic Ocean's warm Gulf Stream.
