CAA reveals traveller habits

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published its 2007 air passenger survey, which questioned more than 210,000 departing passengers at Britain's four London airports, as well as regional hubs including Liverpool and Manchester.

Last year, some 137m people travelled from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Luton, according to the survey, representing more than half of the 241m passengers who flew from the UK in 2007.

The four sampled regional airports had combined traffic of 29m passengers in 2007, representing 12% of all UK travellers.

Business passengers accounted for 36% of all travellers at Heathrow, compared with 24% at Humberside, 21% at Luton and 19% at Stansted.

The largest proportion of leisure passengers (94%) was recorded at Doncaster Sheffield airport, followed by Liverpool (89%), Gatwick (82%), Stansted (81%) and Heathrow (64%).

At Stansted, 46% of people were travelling to visit friends and family last year, compared to 43% at Luton and Liverpool and 32% at Heathrow.

London airports saw a comparatively high level of public transport usage in 2007, with the ratio of travellers using public transport at Stansted (45%) and Heathrow (38%) significantly higher than Liverpool (14%) and Manchester (11%).
